My First Ever Online Shopping Experience

My name is Juliet, a couple of weeks ago my friend sent me a picture of this amazing hair mix to apply on my very tough hair.

She said a friend of hers used it and it worked wonders. I was very eager to find it and I set off for the market the next morning cash in hand ready to search all the beauty stores in the market. You will not believe how futile my efforts were as every attendant I asked either squinted in surprise or directed me to some other shop. After a few more trips to the market and not finding what I wanted my friend suggested I searched online stores which I refused immediately. In my words, I told her “see all the these online stores na scam plus the process of getting one single item is just tedious, not to talk of the what you ordered vs what you get joke”. I had about a million reasons up my sleeve why leaving the comfort of my room and taking transport to go shop-to-shop under the blazing Sun with zero possibility of finding the product I wanted was better than sitting on couch and finding it in a matter of seconds on my device. Hilarious right? Well my resolve to find the product was stronger than whatever reservations I had against online shopping so I decided to give it a try and that is one decision that I did not regret.

Since that day I kept going back to that particular online store to look for virtually anything, so far it was within my buying capacity and so far I needed. As a new convert in this whole online shopping thing I think I can confidently beat my chest and tell you what to look out for when shopping with an online site.

Here goes, from top to bottom.

1. Referrals: The truth is regardless of how much money a person has no one likes to be scammed. So if you are going to shop online then you should shop right. Ask around for reputable online stores and one where you can get your stuff easily. Research and ask about virtually anything and everything. It would save you a lot of stories that touch the heart *wink*

2. Delivery system: This has to be one of my favourite perks of online shopping -the fact that I can get my stuff delivered to my doorstep most especially when the delivery is free just feels heavenly. So when you are doing that survey be sure to check for a site where you can get relatively free, efficient and easy delivery service or at the very least subsidized delivery cost because my guy that will save you some money. Trust me.

3. Pricing: Part of the reasons I was skeptical about searching for the hair product online was because I thought “oh well since its online these people and their agents will just over price these things”.  Lo and behold I checked and I have never been so wrong. The price was lower than what was sold to my friend. So if you’re going to frequent that online store be sure you aren’t paying more for less.

I know this list doesn’t come close to being exhaustive I mean I’m still a newbie at this thing but I’m sure you will have better experiences to share so we keep learning.

Do share with us in the comments about your first online shopping experience.

ONLINE SHOPPING TIPS “the do, the don’t and the watchful”

With increase in the use of the internet come the emerging market of online stores and with it, shopping made easier than ever but it also gave rise to the likelihood of your private information ending up in the wrong hands even though the security of online purchases has advanced with the pace of online sales over the years.

However, you still need to protect yourself from online personal information fraudster and here are tips on things to do, avoid and watch out for.

1) USE A CREDIT/DEBIT CARD WITH ONLINE FRAUD PROTECTION.

First thing first, check or contact your bank or credit card provider to determine if your card has an online fraud protection. If not, try to find one that does offer insurance for online purchases.

Many cards that do will return your money if you are defrauded.

It is discovered that most Credit cards unlike debit cards offers fraud protection. Banks like Guaranty trust bank (GTBank), Access banks and the likes in Nigeria offers things like verification codes which can be used for only one purchase or transaction so that, even if your information is compromised, it can’t be used again so ask your bank if this is an option.

2)ALWAYS RECORD YOUR PURCHASE DETAILS.

Remember, there’s nothing more important than a record keeping, not just in shopping but our daily life. After making a purchase, always record the details of the time, date, receipt number, and order confirmation. If you cannot print one off, take a screenshot as proof of purchase.

3)BE CAREFUL WHAT INFORMATION YOU GIVE.

Never give out excessive information when making online purchases. An online purchase should only require credit/debit card information, address, and phone number. If the website is also asking for your bank verification number (BVN) or social security number, you should be suspicious. This information can be used to steal your identity and should be unnecessary for an online purchase.

4) ALWAYS CHECK YOUR BANK ACCOUNT STATEMENTS REGULARLY.

When shopping online, check your debit/credit card statements frequently. Watch for suspicious charges and check charges against your records. Call your bank or credit card company immediately if you see anything suspicious

For example, if you bought something from a website and notice transactions on your bank statement that you don’t remember making, chances are, you got hacked, contact your bank or credit card provider immediately.

5)AVOID MAKING PURCHASES IN PUBLIC.

Do not buy anything on public computers, including those available at libraries. If you do, your private information will be saved where others can access it. You should even be careful about making a purchase with your own laptop in a public place. Someone might see you input your data or be able to get information from a shared Wi-Fi connection.

If you must make a purchase in public, using cellphone data is more secure than a public Wi-Fi connection. Consider downloading the retailers’ app to make the purchase.

6)WATCH OUT FOR FAKE ONLINE SHOPPING SITES.

Lot of fake website popping up these days, it therefore safer to always check that the website you are working with is real. Verify that the web address isn’t misspellings, like “campusmaiiy.com ” instead of “campusmally.com”.

Also, Fake websites will also replace a “.com” with a “.net.” Check the website carefully for these errors.

Some scams will pretend to be big box stores, so check the domain names carefully to ensure that it is the correct website, an easy way to do this is to shop with well-known businesses that you are familiar with.

Today most major online stores have physical locations parallel to their websites. These retailers should be reliable.

7)AVOID PURCHASING ON SITE WITH UNCLEAR TERMS AND CONDITIONS.

A good online shopping website should be able to provide a clear terms and conditions on use of the site, purchases done on the site, a retailer’s price for the product you are purchasing, including shipping. The retailer should also be able to tell you what exactly you will get in return.

Avoid, for example, online deals that promise a chance to win something if you make repeated subscription payments.

8)ALWAYS READ /CHECK FOR SITE’S PRIVACY POLICY.

Every reputable companies/shopping sites will have a public page on their site for “privacy policy.”

Always check them out to determine whether the company uses your information for something other than the purchase. Many businesses, for example, will use it to email you with updates or deals. Some might pass your information to third parties

Even most legitimate online retailers will use your information to “spam” you with advertisements. You need to decide for yourself whether that is something you are willing to live with.

9)ONLY MAKE PURCHASES ON SECURE WEBSITES.

Do not make purchases on websites that don’t have Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption. To check that your website has SSL:

  • Look for a padlock symbol in your browser address bar. A closed padlock should appear when you enter into a website with SSL.
  • The first letters in the address bar should change from “http” to “https.” Typically, this will not happen for some site until you reach the payment stage
  • An unbroken key may also be present on a secure website.

10) NEVER STOP GETTING INFORMED ABOUT SCAMS.

Do note, not all emails and social network notifications, some of which appear to be from well-known companies are true. Some are made by fraudster to circulate around the internet to “phish” for people’s private information. Legitimate companies, including banks, will never send you an email with a link requesting your login, password, or credit card details.

Be suspicious of any unsolicited advertisements that seem to promise too much. If someone, for example, is offering you a free tablet, chances are that they are not legitimate

If the deal is supposedly offered through a major retailer, go directly through the retailers’ website rather than following the link in the advertisement.

Popular scams will often be discussed on the news and articles. Watch the news to keep abreast of current security threats.

MENSTRUAL SHOPPING

OK, l will be honest here, it was quite odd that it was this topic that popped up in head and I couldn’t just let go or think about anything else, so I begin to do my various researches (since obviously I’m a guy and have not idea how a menstrual period works). Therefore I had to go up close and personal with some ladies (old and young) to enquire on what their menstrual, must have, to do and shopping  list are.
So, here are the common list of period essentials that most girl should carry with themselves during their menstrual period .

Since it comes around every month, it’s best to be prepared for it. So even  if it to come early, you want to have had the materials that you needed, won’t you? Or even if it’s right on schedule.

Here are period essentials that will make your time of the month go by easier.

1) ANALGESIC / PAIN PILLS

If you’re worried about stomach cramps (for those still expecting their first period this should be noted ) , you should carry around a bottle of aspirin. Never take more than you have to, but take enough to make your pain bearable. This was one of the major period essentials that I discovered among of the ladies I spoke with that most never be forgotten. When your pain becomes too strong, you won’t be able to concentrate on the tasks you need to complete. Reducing your stomach pains is the first step to making your period more manageable.

2) CHOCOLATES / CANDY.
One thing that was all agreed upon is the craving period brings with it and what more cheers you more than eating your favorite candy? You probably crave the same few things whenever your period starts. Carry around a snack or two in order to satisfy that craving.
But remember it OK to do so as long as you don’t do it constantly. So tuck some few chocolate bar inside that bag of yours before leaving the house.

3) SANITARY WIPES
Hey, we all know periods can get a little messy sometimes . So In order to clean up while out of your home , carrying a sanitary wipes would do the magic. It won’t hurt to carry some from time to time. You can get the version that comes in a miniature packages (very small sizes) , so that they’re easy to carry. Even if you don’t want to carry a purse around, they’re small enough to fit in your pockets

4) HOT WATER BOTTLE
OK, I’m going to go all nerd out here a little. Some scientists (since Google is my friend) who studied pains discovered that the pain of colic, cystitis and period pain is caused by a temporary reduction in blood flow to, or over-distension of, hollow organs such as the bowel or uterus which causes local tissue damage and activates pain receptors.
You must be wondering where I’m going with all this, among the discovery was that using a hot water bottle on your abdomen during the first few hours of pain may provide some relief. And it doesn’t just relief the pains, it actually deactivates the pain at a molecular level in much the same way as pharmaceutical painkillers work.
So in essence you don’t want to forget to alway carry one along with you at all times ..

5) ( The obvious) PADS or TAMPONS
OK, this is obviously the most important and known by all ladies  but still my nerd senses won’t let me to speak a little on this.. (lol… don’t mind me..).
Some of you might be wondering what a tampon is, since it isn’t so common in this part of the world unlike pads. A tampon is a blend of absorbent materials that’s inserted inside your vagina to absorb menstrual blood before it leaves your body (above pic right)  unlike pads that are worn outside the body to receive the blood
Both pads and tampons provide great protection but biggest difference is that pads are worn on the outside (on your undies) and tampons are worn inside your body.
So coming back to the topic at hand, always carry more than enough pads or tampons (depending on whichever you are comfortable with) . It’s better to have too many in your bag/purse than to run out of them when you need them the most.

Pads & tampons

6) (The not so obvious) PANTY LINER, EXTRA PAIRS OF CLEAN PANTIES,BODY SPRAY  and STAIN REMOVAL,
Among the things I found out which weren’t listed  by most of the ladies I spoke with (for obvious reason best known to them where panty liners, clean panties in cases of blood leakage, a deodorant (Body Spray) you love, in cases when you are having a gross feeling to make it go away (at least a little) and finally a stain removal since It’s never fun to find a stain on your favorite pair of skirt or jeans when out in public and you really don’t want anyone to notice the stain.

Having some sort of stain remover on you can save you from the embarrassment.

So remember even if your time of the month isn’t set to come for another week, having the materials you need with you might go a long way.

You never know when it might come early and If it does, it helps to be prepared.

Please ensure  you have everything you need for your next monthly visitor.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Please I would love if  ladies can share their experiences in the comment section below on their styles/strategies for handling a period with tips on dealing with pain period brings monthly.

NEW YEAR SHOPPING RESOLUTIONS AS A NAIJA PERSON

Many people in different parts of the world set various goals at the beginning of every year as part of their new year’s resolutions . But if you have any thoughts of setting up a financial goal, especially with the economy being as it is, a new year’s resolution focused on your shopping habits would be wise to consider, won’t it? . if you haven’t done this yet, not to worry, after all it’s still January!!

1. Do your homework/research
This year, stop shopping on a whim. Instead, do your homework. Research the products you want, comparing prices between stores and applying relevant coupons while also checking out customer reviews. You could potentially save a considerable amount of money securing the best deal while avoiding less-than-satisfactory products.

But it’s not just about keeping your eyes peeled for a sale or searching for a promo code. You can plan when to make major purchases, simply by knowing that certain product categories reach their lowest prices at certain times of the year.

2. Pick the right products.
One of the biggest mistakes most shoppers make especially in Nigeria is buying the wrong product — for example, buying a more expensive product because of its hype when a cheaper one does what you need.

Before you make a major purchase, determine what you need in a new product and write down a list of the features you value most. You may find that a less advanced (and more affordable) version will have everything you need.

You’ll cut costs by buying a model without extraneous features you’ll hardly use. This especially applies to electronics, including cameras, activity trackers, streaming media players and smartphones.

3. Be a loyal customer.
Prove your loyalty this year by closely following your favorite retailers. Sign up for email lists (new subscribers often receive a coupon to save on their next purchase) and follow retailers on social media to be among the first to know about sales and deals.

Plus, the more you frequent a store, the more familiar you’ll become with the retailer’s regular promotions.
Furthermore, you can always use loyalty to your advantage. When negotiating prices on major purchases, such as hair products, clothing and mattresses, it can’t hurt to remind sales associates of your continued dedication. After all, they won’t want to lose business because of one bad deal.

4. Put your phone to work.
We bet you already use your phone a lot (or maybe too much), but don’t neglect to use it when you shop.
Whether you shop online or prefer the experience of in-store browsing, keep your smartphone handy this year.

Load your device with shopping apps and compare prices of items. Also don’t forget to check other retailers so you can find out when they meet a competitor’s price or beat it. Comparing prices is how you get the best deals.

Be open to more options too. Like shops notifying you of sales happening in your general location, help you keep track of budgeting for gifts (You Need a Budget), and organize all of your tracking numbers for deliveries of online purchases.

5.Be prepared for major sales especially Black Friday and cyber Monday .
Finally, always be on the lookout for major sales such as clearance sales, black Friday and cyber Monday.
Black Friday may not be until November, but you can resolve now to be prepared. Before the hyped shopping day arrives, decide which products you want to buy and keep an eye out for retailers’ sales circulars as the time nears. There are deals to be had on everything from appliances to electronics on the day after America’s Thanksgiving, and you won’t want to be sitting on the sidelines when all the sales action goes down.
